16+ Exam Guidance

What is the 16+ Entrance Exam?

There is not a common entrance exam for 16+ which is for entry into sixth form. Instead, exams are created individually by schools and are usually taken in year 10.

These are considered alongside English language ability for overseas students, predicted GCSE grades, a headteacher’s reference and sometimes a personal statement from the student.


Exam information:

● English
● There is no standardised process for 16+ but schools usually base them on the GCSE syllabus.
● Students will usually sit papers in all the A-levels/IB subjects they are applying to take.
● Overseas students will be required to have Ukiset, IELTS or show other evidence of English language proficiency. ● In addition, there may be general, critical thinking or reasoning papers.


Length of exam:

● Papers are between 45-60 minutes depending on the subject.
